OZ 2020. So as we stare down the barrel of global economic meltdown, and watch our traditional resource and manufacturing industries flounder with structural change, what next? Is this not the time to look at bold initiatives? Where are the ideas from the 2020 summit? What about Green Tech, and Digital Creative industries? As we splash billions on stimulus packages and future infrastructure, who is defining the next, the new, planting the seeds of the next industry. Can innovation be driven from inside the current automotive, power and mining sectors as they struggle with financial turmoil, lack of investment capital and a market that will surely reward conservatism over risk. Now is the time to plant those seeds of innovation in research, small business and industry sectors that have potential but need risk capital. Having spent the last few years chairing the Digital Action Agenda which researched and laid out the structural and economic plan for the Australian creative sector, it was essentially ignored by both sides of government, one begins to wonder if either side has the vision required to foster innovation. You can check out the full details if interested here http://www.archive.dcita.gov.au/2007/12/digital_content_industry_action_agenda Also, unless you have been asleep you may have also noticed focus on global climate change and a trend to green industries, conservation, efficient power, solar, wind and yes new sources for peak power. Where are these programs in the national infrastructure proposals, to build these sectors will require risk and investment that will not be possible in the current market driven system. These are long term projects beyond any election cycle. While insulating every Australian home in the current spending proposals, is not a bad idea it doesn’t address the core of the power and environmental issues. New thinking is required from us all.
